NAS 410 Certification

Understanding NAS 410: An Overview of NDT Personnel Certification

NAS-410 Certification requirements are aligned with this document published by the Aerospace Industries Association of America, Inc. and must be followed in order to conduct Inspection Work related to Aviation, Aircraft, NADCAP Audit, etc. If you are doing ANY of the above mentioned work for clients, your Written Practice MUST align with this document.

The NAS-410 Document may also be used to create in-house, employer-based Certification Programs for General Industry.

NAS-410 may also be used to create in-house certification programs for General Industry.

Please be aware that if your company does a combination of work related to NAS-410, ASME, and ASNT, your company may be required to operate under multiple Written Practice Documents. The NAS-410 Standard has too many differences from the other Codes to include all of the varieties of information in one document.

Remember that this page only includes a broad overview of the recommendations and requirements of the NAS-410 document. The specifics of applying the NAS-410 requirements are included in the development of your company’s written practice.

What is NAS 410?

NAS 410 stands for National Aerospace Standard 410. It is a globally recognized standard that outlines the minimum requirements for the qualification and certification of NDT personnel. Primarily used in the aerospace industry, but also used for general industry applications, it ensures that NDT technicians have the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to perform inspections safely and effectively.

The Importance in NDT

Ensuring Safety and Reliability, Promoting Consistency, Regulatory Compliance

In industries where safety is paramount, such as aerospace, even minor flaws in materials or components can lead to catastrophic failures. This certification program ensures that NDT personnel are trained to detect such defects accurately, thereby safeguarding lives and investments.

NAS 410 establishes a uniform framework for certifying NDT personnel, hence eliminating discrepancies across organizations and countries. This consistency is essential for global operations and collaboration.

Many aerospace companies and regulatory bodies, such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), require adherence to NAS 410. Compliance demonstrates a commitment to industry standards and enhances credibility.

NAS-410 Certification Levels

Levels of Certification

Trainee – An individual who is documented as participating in a training program within a method and is also in the process of becoming qualified for certification to Level 1-Limited, Level 1 or directly to Level 2 shall be considered a trainee.

NAS 410 defines four levels of certification for NDT personnel:

  1. Level 1 – Limited: Example – Limited certification for performing Ultrasonic Wall Thickness Testing using a digital readout or performing Magnetic Particle Inspection using an AC Yoke Only, Liquid Penetrant using Aerosol Techniques Only, etc.
    • Level 1-Limited is a limited certification allowing only the performance of a specific NDT test on a specified part, part feature, or assembly.
    • Able to follow work instructions;
    • Receive guidance or supervision from a certified Level 2 or Level 3 in the method when necessary;
    • Skills to perform equipment standardization in accordance with approved work instructions;
    • Skills and knowledge to carry out any necessary preparation and processing of parts before or after testing in accordance with approved work instructions;
    • Have the skills and knowledge to evaluate test results and perform acceptance or rejection of a specific part, part feature, or assembly in accordance with approved work instructions, and within the limitations documented by the Responsible Level 3.
  2. Level 1: After additional hours of training and experience as specified in the company written practice
    • Can perform all the duties of Level 1 Limited, and in addition…
    • Broader application of multiple techniques within a method
    • Working toward Level 2 Certification
  3. Level 2: Additional hours of training and experience as specified in the company written practice
    • Set up and calibrate equipment, perform tests, and also interpret results.
    • Thoroughly familiar with the scope and limitations of the technique/method
    • Ability to work alone, with access to Level 3 personnel for further instruction or development
    • Be capable of developing work instructions from approved general procedures. Such work instructions shall also require final approval by a Level 3 certified in the method
    • Supervises Level 1 personnel and also requires more extensive training and experience.
  4. Level 3: Highest level of certificationClick Here for the Specific Requirements to Achieve NAS410 Level 3 Certification
    • Develops NDT procedures and also oversees training programs.
    • Interpret codes, standards, and other contractual documents that control the NDT method(s);
    • Assume technical responsibility for the NDT facility and staff;
    • Selecting the method and technique for a specific test;
    • Preparing and verifying the adequacy of procedures and work instructions;
    • Approve NDT procedures in addition to work instructions for technical adequacy;
    • General knowledge of other NDT methods, product manufacturing, in addition to test technologies used by the employer;
    • Capable of providing or directing training, examination, and certification of personnel;
    • Conduct NDT for the acceptance of parts and document the results if a demonstration of proficiency in this ability was included in the practical examination;
    • When required by the written practice, be capable of auditing outside agencies to ensure the requirements of the written practice are met.

Methods of NDT

NAS 410 covers various NDT methods, including:

  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Using sound waves to detect flaws.
  • Radiographic Testing (RT): Employing X-rays or gamma rays to inspect internal structures.
  • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT): Identifying surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials.
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT): Revealing surface flaws through dye or fluorescent penetrants.
  • Eddy Current Testing (ET): Detecting cracks and corrosion using electromagnetic induction.
  • Visual Inspection (VT): Visual inspection is one of main inspection methods used across all industries. While NAS-410 does not call out specific certification requirements for VT, our company does offer a VT Qualification Program. Training and Experience Requirements

Each certification level and NDT method requires specific hours of training and hands-on experience. For example, Level 1 certification in ultrasonic testing might require 40 hours of training and 210 hours of practical experience.

Examination and Recertification

Certification also involves a combination of written and hands-on practical tests. Additionally, to maintain certification, personnel must undergo periodic recertification and skills verification tests to ensure their skills remain up to date.

The Certification Process

Step 1: Initial Training

Candidates must complete formal training programs tailored to the NDT method they wish to specialize in. These programs include both theoretical and practical components.

Step 2: Gaining Experience

In addition to formal training, On-the-job training under the supervision of certified personnel is essential. This hands-on experience also helps candidates understand real-world challenges and solutions.

Step 3: Passing Examinations

Candidates must pass a series of examinations, including:

  • A general knowledge test covering theory.
  • A specific test focusing on procedures used in the chosen NDT method.
  • A practical test demonstrating their ability to perform inspections.

Step 4: Certification Issuance

Upon successful completion of the examinations, the employer or certifying body issues the certification which is valid for a specific period (generally five years). NOTE – While certifications are issued for a five year period, NAS-410 requires an annual hands-on proficiency test to maintain the certification.

Step 5: Recertification

To maintain their credentials, however, NDT personnel must demonstrate continued competence through recertification. This may involve additional training, examinations, or evidence of continued work in the field.

Summary

Understanding and adhering to NAS 410 is crucial for NDT personnel and their employers. Here are the main takeaways:

  • Definition and Importance: NAS 410 is a standard for NDT personnel certification which also ensures safety, consistency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Certification Levels: Four levels (Level 1 – Limited, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3) define roles and responsibilities.
  • NDT Methods: Includes UT, RT, MT, PT, and ET. Suggested VT Qualification
  • Certification Process: Involves training, experience, examinations, and periodic recertification.
  • Challenges and Solutions: Staying updated, managing costs, and also ensuring global consistency are critical considerations.

By understanding NAS 410, organizations and individuals can maintain high inspection standards, fostering trust and reliability in critical industries.
